Blockstream Swaps Fills Gap in Cross-Layer Infrastructure
Blockstream has launched Blockstream Swaps, a new service that enables users to move funds between Bitcoin's mainchain, the Lightning Network, and the Liquid Network. The product is currently in beta with select participants and aims to fill a growing gap in Bitcoin's cross-layer infrastructure.
The timing of the launch is notable, coming just one week after Boltz, the most prominent swap service connecting these same layers, suspended operations due to AI-directed attacks.
Blockstream Swaps uses HTLC-based atomic swap mechanisms, which ensure that either both sides of a trade complete or neither does. This trustless design means no intermediary ever holds users' funds during a swap. If something goes wrong mid-transaction, the funds return to their original owner after a timeout period.
The service supports submarine swaps, allowing users to convert on-chain BTC into LBTC (Liquid Bitcoin) and route payments through Lightning. Blockstream Swaps consolidates this process into a single interface, making it easier for users to navigate the different layers.
