Blockstream Unveils Quantum-Resistant Signature Scheme for Bitcoin
Blockstream has introduced a new Bitcoin Improvement Proposal (BIP) called SHRINCS to protect Bitcoin from potential quantum computing threats. The post-quantum signature scheme is designed to secure transactions and maintain current speeds under Segregated Witness, but it poses challenges such as larger signature sizes and complex key management.
SHRINCS has already been tested on Blockstream's Liquid sidechain, which shows its feasibility in a controlled environment. However, broader adoption would require community consensus and further technical development to overcome the limitations of usability and scalability.
Blockstream is also exploring related technologies like lattice-based schemes and zero-knowledge proofs to improve performance and security, but implementation on Bitcoin's main network remains uncertain and will involve lengthy governance discussions.
