BNB Smart Chain Validators Upgrade Capacity Ahead of Schedule
BNB Smart Chain (BSC) validators are in the process of upgrading to increase the network's capacity, aiming to complete the transition by September 15. This upgrade is a direct follow-on to the Pasteur hard fork that activated on August 25, which introduced BEP-675 and BidBlock V2. The latter allows specialized builders to construct blocks offline and submit them pre-executed, reducing redundant computation at the validator level.
The upgrade involves raising the target block gas limit to 70 million, a move designed to keep pace with a network already running at more than 95% utilization. Early mainnet data suggests that BidBlock V2 is working effectively, with an average 28% increase in gas per block compared to the prior methodology. The on-chain gas limit has already crossed 55 million, but with utilization consistently above 95%, there's little room left before users start feeling congestion in the form of slower confirmations and rising fees.
The dynamic gas limit approach requires validators to calculate and adjust the figure based on real-time conditions rather than a static setting. This framework also necessitates validators to refine their block-packing and simulation strategies to handle larger blocks efficiently.
