BNB Surpasses Ether as Largest Holding in Grayscale's Smart Contract Fund
Grayscale's Smart Contract Fund has undergone a significant rebalancing in Q2, handing BNB (Binance Coin) a 30.6% weighting and nudging Ether (Ethereum) to second place with 29.47%, followed by Solana at 29.15%. This move signals institutional conviction in the Binance-linked chain's developer traction, fee-generating activity, and tokenomics.
The rebalancing committee judged BNB's strengths sufficient to outweigh both Ethereum and Solana, indicating a shift in the market's perception of layer-1 chains. The change comes as BNB Chain experiences rising developer engagement, with regular appearances alongside Ethereum and Polygon in recent Top 10 Blockchains by Developer Activity.
The DeFi Fund also saw smaller adjustments, reducing UNI (Uniswap) exposure while keeping it as the dominant holding at 34.16%, and trimming NEAR (NEAR Protocol) in the Decentralized AI Fund, yet maintaining its pole position at 31.35%. These changes reflect a methodical pruning rather than a loss of faith in either asset.
The new weightings signal that chains with deep exchange integrations, mature DeFi landscapes, and aggressive fee-burn mechanics can attract institutional interest. However, the weighting may not stick, as quarterly rebalances can reverse quickly, and actual dollar flows remain uncertain.
