BoJ Hawkishness Boosts Yen as Fed Rate Hike Bets Clash
The Japanese Yen (JPY) has steadied near its August highs as investors weigh the implications of a potential rate hike by the Bank of Japan (BoJ) against bets on a rate increase by the US Federal Reserve (Fed). The USD/JPY pair is struggling to capitalize on Friday's modest bounce from early August lows, trading just below the 156.00 mark.
The BoJ's hawkish repricing has contributed to the JPY's strength, with traders now fully pricing in a 25 basis point rate hike at the next BoJ meeting on September 17-18 and considering a follow-up move in December. Meanwhile, the better-than-expected US Nonfarm Payrolls (NFP) report has increased the chances of a rate hike by the Fed at its upcoming meeting on September 15-16, but USD bulls remain hesitant.
The escalating US-Iran tensions and the widening confrontation in the Strait of Hormuz are acting as a tailwind for the safe-haven Greenback, limiting the downside for the USD/JPY pair. However, the technical outlook remains bearish, with the 200-day Simple Moving Average (SMA) at 158.46 serving as a significant resistance level.
