Bolivia Embraces Crypto with Plans to Integrate Digital Assets into Financial System
Bolivia is set to integrate cryptocurrencies and stablecoins into its financial system as part of an effort to modernize the country's economy. The government has announced plans to allow banks to custody crypto on behalf of clients, with digital currencies functioning as legal tender for savings accounts, credit products, and loans.
The decision marks a reversal from previous restrictive policies toward digital assets. Economic Minister Jose Gabriel Espinoza said, 'You can't control crypto globally, so you have to recognize it and use it to your advantage.'
Bolivia has struggled with high inflation, with the boliviano averaging above 22% in the 12 months to October. Residents have turned to stablecoins as a store of value and medium of exchange, with businesses starting to denominate prices in USDT.
The government's decision is part of a broader trend of nation-states integrating cryptocurrencies into their financial systems. Stablecoins have gained popularity in Latin America and other emerging economies due to high inflation and strict currency controls.
