Boltz Halted by Sophisticated AI-Assisted Cyber Attacks
Boltz, a leading Bitcoin atomic swap and bridge protocol, has suspended its swap services indefinitely due to a series of sophisticated AI-assisted cyber attacks. The halt began at 5:54 a.m ET on an unspecified date, with the Lightning and Liquid swap rails cut off from wallets such as Aqua and Bitcoin Bull.
In a statement, the Boltz team explained that they have seen a steady rise in automated, AI-assisted probing of their infrastructure over the past months. Each exploit was contained, but the pattern is clear: attackers now iterate faster than a team of their size can find and patch vulnerabilities.
The attacks appeared to originate from 'resourceful groups', according to Boltz. The protocol's API remains online, conducting refunds for incoming swaps. Users' Bitcoin remains secure due to its non-custodial design, and operational costs were absorbed internally.
Lucas Ferreira of the Bitcoin non-profit Vinteum noted that Boltz has a brilliant team but is facing increasingly sophisticated, AI-powered groups of hackers. Francis Pouliot, CEO of Bull Bitcoin, said the company was working to restore swap capabilities, while Samson Mow, CEO of JAN3, stated that its team was working with Boltz to restore functionality.
The Boltz attacks are the latest in a series of high-profile cyber attacks on the crypto industry. Recent examples include the Metronome synthetic asset shortfall and the Adform script poisoning.
