Bond Buybacks Spark Bitcoin Short Squeeze
The recent surge in Bitcoin's price can be attributed to a series of events that began in the U.S. bond market.
The U.S. Treasury announced it would buy back more long-term government bonds, increasing its operations from around $2 billion to at least $4 billion.
This move pushed long-term bond yields lower, making assets like Bitcoin more attractive as investors sought alternative investments due to the lower returns on safe government debt.
The resulting price increase triggered a short squeeze, where traders who had bet against Bitcoin were forced to close their positions and buy back into the market, further driving up the price.
In 24 hours, over $1.59 billion worth of crypto positions were liquidated, including $746 million in Bitcoin shorts.
