Bond Market Turmoil Boosts Gold and Bitcoin as Investors Seek Safe Havens
The turmoil in the bond market has sent shockwaves through global financial markets, boosting the prices of gold and Bitcoin.
Investors are flocking to these assets as a safe haven from the uncertainty caused by rising long-term government bond yields and concerns about the value of the US dollar. The Treasury Department's announcement last week that it would double its bond buyback program has added fuel to the fire, with prices surging after a 22% jump in Bitcoin's price.
Russell Rhoads, a clinical associate professor of financial management at Indiana University's Kelley School of Business, noted that while the scale of the buybacks is small compared to the overall bond market, it sends a concerning signal. 'They're trying to influence the long end, but they're doing it with a drop in the bucket,' he said.
The rally has also been driven by concerns about inflation and the growing burden of government debt, which crossed $40 trillion last week. The shift away from bonds reflects broader concerns in financial markets that could impact the economy, including higher Treasury yields, a weaker dollar, and increased borrowing costs for consumers and businesses.
