Bond Market Turmoil Sends Bitcoin and Gold Soaring
Bitcoin and gold saw significant gains this week, boosted by frantic activity in the bond market and developments in Washington. The cryptocurrency rose above $77,000, while gold reached $4,661 on Friday.
The Treasury Department's announcement to increase its buybacks of long-term Treasurys sparked a dollar sell-off, causing investors to shift towards alternative assets like gold and bitcoin. This move was seen as a debasement trade, where investors flood into assets perceived as safe-haven investments.
President Donald Trump's call for Congress to pass the Clarity Act, which would ease crypto regulations, also contributed to the surge in bitcoin prices. The Commodity Futures Trading Commission Chair Mike Selig pledged to use every tool available to advance Trump's agenda.
The Treasury's actions negatively affected the money investors could make on U.S. bonds and the dollar, leading to a wave of forced purchases of bitcoin as investors closed their short positions.
