Brazil Considers Allowing Cryptocurrency Holders to Carry Firearms Amid Rising Physical Attacks
A proposal to amend Brazil's gun laws has been put forward by federal deputy Capitão Alden (PL-BA), aimed at allowing individuals who hold cryptocurrencies in self-custody and are at risk of physical coercion to carry firearms.
The proposed law, PL 5.297/2026, seeks to alter the country's gun control laws, known as the Estatuto do Desarmamento, to include 'possessors of virtual assets under physical coercion risk' among those eligible for a firearms permit.
The permit would be valid nationwide and subject to future regulation.
Critical to qualifying for the permit is that individuals must maintain direct and exclusive control over their virtual assets in self-custody, without an intermediary able to block or restrict transactions, and have significant public exposure related to the cryptocurrency market.
