Brazil Hits Pause on Big Crypto Transfers Amid Stablecoin Growth Concerns
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has expressed concerns about Brazil's rapidly growing crypto-asset market, particularly stablecoins pegged to the US dollar. According to the IMF report released in July, cross-border cryptocurrency flows in Brazil are growing faster than traditional capital flows and nominal GDP.
The IMF noted that 71.7% of all reported crypto activity in Brazil over the last six years relates to stablecoins, which have played a key role in the market's growth.
In response to these concerns, the Central Bank of Brazil has introduced a resolution requiring a mandatory 24-hour delay on certain cryptocurrency transfers exceeding $10,000. This measure aims to prevent fraud and give institutions time to assess the risk of transactions.
