Brazilian Crypto Market Faces Mass Consolidation Amid Strict Capital Rules
The Brazilian crypto market is bracing for a significant transformation due to strict capital rules imposed by the central bank. The new regulations require virtual asset service providers (VASPs) to hold up to 37.2 million reais, nearly $7.2 million, in some cases. This has led to a mass exit of smaller crypto firms, with estimates suggesting that around 290 out of 300 VASPs will be forced to shut down or consolidate.
Only 10 companies are expected to meet the new capital requirements and obtain a license to continue operating. The deadline for firms to apply for authorization is October 30, after which those not approved will have 30 days to wind down their operations. Analysts say this consolidation process will restrict innovation in the market.
Isabel Longhi, director of Public and Regulatory Policies for Latin America at Ripple, stated that this will represent a 'market correction movement' that will separate the 'wheat from the chaff.' She noted that consolidation is a natural part of the market's maturation process, but expressed concern about preventing small players from operating simply because they are small.
