The Brazilian Federal Police launched Operation Commodity to take down an international crime syndicate accused of trafficking cocaine to Europe and laundering billions through cryptocurrencies and other financial channels.

Authorities arrested nine suspects, froze assets worth up to R$1 billion (about $180 million), and executed 13 arrest warrants and 44 search and seizure warrants in the states of São Paulo, Minas Gerais, Santa Catarina, and Espírito Santo.

The investigation revealed that the group transported approximately 6.5 metric tons of cocaine to multiple European countries through maritime shipping routes since 2021, often concealing narcotics inside shipments of coffee, cement, and mortar.

Cryptocurrencies played a central role in laundering proceeds, with authorities alleging that the organization moved billions of dollars through a combination of cryptocurrency transactions, shell companies, luxury assets, and real estate investments to disguise the origin of criminal funds.
