Brazilian Police Dismantle $196 Million Cocaine Trafficking Ring Using Crypto
Operation Commodity was a large-scale operation conducted by the Brazilian federal police to dismantle a massive cocaine trafficking ring. The group, which used luxury car dealerships and shell companies to launder their profits, smuggled over 6.5 tons of cocaine to Europe since 2021. The operation, which involved logistics networks spanning South America, Europe, and Asia, was able to freeze nearly $196 million in illicit assets.
The group's money laundering scheme used cryptocurrency to conceal their transactions. They operated a luxury car dealership in São Paulo that offered high-end vehicles like Ferrari and Porsche, and issued invoices without supporting documentation to introduce the funds into the Brazilian financial system.
During the operation, 13 arrests were made and 44 search-and-seizures were executed. A shootout erupted at one location, resulting in the death of a suspect who resisted arrest. The group had links to two criminal organizations designated as Specially Designated Global Terrorists (SDGTs) by the Trump Administration.
The operation was able to terminate the activities of the group and hold them accountable for their crimes. 'The suspects will be held accountable, to the extent of their responsibilities, for the crimes of transnational criminal organization, international drug trafficking, and money laundering,' the Federal Police concluded.
