Brazilian Police Dismantle Massive Crypto-Linked Cocaine Trafficking Operation
Brazilian authorities have dismantled a massive cocaine trafficking and money laundering operation that used cryptocurrency-enabled brokers to wash proceeds from Europe. The operation, dubbed Operation Commodity, is one of the largest crypto-linked takedowns in Latin American history.
Since 2021, the network allegedly shipped around 6.5 metric tons of cocaine to countries including France, Belgium, Germany, Slovenia, and Spain. The laundered proceeds were funneled through illicit cryptocurrency brokers operating in the shadows of the digital asset ecosystem.
The Federal Police executed 13 arrest warrants and 44 search-and-seizure warrants across multiple Brazilian states, taking nine suspects into custody. One suspect was killed during a confrontation with law enforcement. Courts ordered asset freezes and seizures totaling up to R$1 billion, roughly $196 million, including luxury goods, real estate, and front company assets.
The network is allegedly tied to two of Brazil's most notorious criminal factions: Primeiro Comando da Capital (PCC) and Comando Vermelho (CV). Investigators uncovered a complex laundering apparatus involving fake invoices, high-value real estate transactions, a luxury car dealership functioning as a front company, and cryptocurrency dealings designed to obscure the money trail.
