Brazilian Police Smash $196 Million Cocaine Crypto Laundering Ring
Operation Commodity has successfully dismantled a massive cocaine and cryptocurrency laundering ring in Brazil. The operation, led by the Brazilian federal police, targeted a group that used the port of Rio de Janeiro to smuggle cocaine hidden in coffee, cement, and mortar shipments to Europe.
The group, which had links to the Primeiro Comando da Capital (PCC) and Comando Vermelho (CV), is accused of processing over 6.5 tons of cocaine since 2021 to various European countries, including France, Belgium, Germany, Slovenia, and Spain.
During the operation, which involved actions in São Paulo, Minas Gerais, Santa Catarina, and Espírito Santo, 13 preventive arrests and 44 search-and-seizures were executed. A shootout erupted in one of these locations, resulting in a suspect's death from gunshot wounds.
The group used shell companies to launder the drug trafficking proceeds using cryptocurrency, introducing funds into the Brazilian financial system and leveraging digital currency to conceal and obfuscate their transactions. The luxury car dealership in Greater São Paulo, which offered Ferrari, Porsche, Corvette, and Land Rover vehicles, was also part of the operation.
The federal police have seized assets and frozen property worth nearly $196 million as part of the operation. The suspects will face charges for transnational criminal organization, international drug trafficking, and money laundering.
