Brazilian Police Smash Cocaine Crypto Money Laundering Ring with $196M Asset Freeze
Brazil's Federal Police has dismantled a massive cocaine trafficking ring that used cryptocurrency to launder its profits. Operation Commodity, which was launched in response to the group's activities, resulted in 13 arrests and the freezing of nearly $196 million in illicit assets.
The group, which shipped over 6.5 tons of cocaine to Europe since 2021 through the port of Rio de Janeiro, used coffee and cement bags to disguise the drugs. The money obtained from these sales was laundered using shell companies, including a luxury car dealership that offered Ferrari, Porsche, Corvette, and Land Rover vehicles.
The police investigation revealed that the group had links to the Primeiro Comando da Capital (PCC) and Comando Vermelho (CV), two criminal organizations designated as Specially Designated Global Terrorists by the Trump Administration. The operation also seized assets valued at over 1 billion reais, approximately $196 million.
A shootout erupted during one of the raids, resulting in the death of a suspect who resisted arrest. The police emphasized that those involved will be held accountable for their crimes, including transnational criminal organization, international drug trafficking, and money laundering.
