Brazil's Banks Test the Crypto Waters, Keeping Assets Off Balance Sheets
Brazil's largest banks have started offering cryptocurrency products to their clients, but it appears they're keeping them off their balance sheets.
A report from Banco Central do Brasil reveals that as of March 2026, none of the country's top banks held any virtual assets on their balance sheets. This distinction is crucial, as Brazil is exploring whether banks can provide crypto services without being exposed to market volatility.
The consumer-facing aspect is already evident. Itaú and Nubank are among the banks that allow clients to buy 15 different cryptocurrencies, including Bitcoin and Ether. Banco do Brasil reported over R$11 million ($2.1 million) in transactions related to crypto products this year.
The separation between allowing clients to engage with cryptocurrency operations and not classifying the related assets as investment instruments seems deliberate. This is evident from the way banks are handling their books, keeping crypto assets separate from their balance sheets. The Brazilian market has been rapidly expanding, with a significant increase in transaction volumes over the past few years.
