Brazil's Central Bank Cracks Down on Unlicensed Crypto Providers
Brazil's central bank has introduced new regulations for the country's cryptocurrency sector. By October 30, 2026, all virtual asset service providers must secure a formal license or risk being cut off from the banking system.
The Banco Central do Brasil implemented three resolutions outlining a licensing regime for these providers. Current businesses have approximately nine months to comply with the requirements before the impending deadline in October.
Licensed operators will be obliged to adhere to several rigorous standards, including keeping client assets separate from their own and maintaining a minimum capital reserve of around R$37.2 million. They must also undergo independent audits and bolster cybersecurity measures.
The regulations aim to enforce transaction limits and disclosure obligations for cross-border transactions involving fiat-pegged stablecoins. The central bank's decision highlights the dominance of stablecoins in Brazil, accounting for nearly 90% of digital asset transactions.
