Brazil's Crypto Industry Braces for Sharp Contraction Amid Licensing Deadline
Brazil's crypto industry is bracing for a sharp contraction as new licensing deadlines approach. According to industry estimates, fewer than 10% of the country's estimated 150 to 300 virtual asset companies plan to seek Central Bank authorization before October 30.
The scale of the pullback illustrates just how disruptive Brazil's crypto licensing rules have become for an industry that operated with far less oversight until recently. The new framework requires applicants to meet strict governance, audit and compliance standards, alongside capital thresholds ranging from R$10.8 million to R$37.2 million.
The Central Bank has already begun building a real-time crypto threat alert system with Hypernative, following incidents in which attackers converted stolen funds into cryptocurrency. Meanwhile, Brazilian banks have been expanding their crypto services since 2025, while operating under their existing regulatory licenses.
