Brazil's Crypto Purchases Plummet Amid Intensified Regulation
Brazil's cryptocurrency market is facing intense regulatory scrutiny, leading to a significant decline in crypto purchases. According to data from the Central Bank of Brazil, $572 million was spent on crypto assets in July, a staggering 80% drop from June's $2.6 billion. This downturn is attributed to the adaptation period of major cryptocurrency exchanges to new regulations.
Fernando Rocha, head of the central bank's statistics department, explained that this decline reflects 'an important factor behind the reduction in flows' due to intensified regulation and supervision. He pointed specifically to anti-money laundering controls and governance requirements as key elements behind the reduction.
Despite this drop, Brazil's crypto investments remain overwhelmingly positive. Year-to-date, crypto purchases have reached $15.25 billion, more than doubling last year's numbers. Stablecoins were the main target of these transactions, accounting for most of the reported transactions.
