Brazil's Cryptocurrency Market Quadruples in Five Years Amid Regulatory Clarity
Brazil's cryptocurrency market has experienced rapid growth in recent years, with trading value more than quadrupling from 2020 to 2025. According to Decrypt, the country's 2025 cryptocurrency trading value reached a record 505.5 billion reais, representing a 433% increase from the 94.9 billion reais seen in 2020.
As Brazil's regulatory framework for cryptocurrencies becomes more defined, large financial groups are expanding their product lineups to include digital-asset offerings. For example, Itau offers 15 cryptocurrencies on its investment app, including Bitcoin, Ether, and USDC. Banco do Brasil has also started a direct Bitcoin and Ether purchase service, processing over 11 million reais in transactions.
Despite the growth, banks have not taken direct ownership of cryptocurrencies, instead choosing to hold customer assets and process trading without taking price and liquidity risks onto their balance sheets. The expansion of digital-asset products is largely due to clearer rules put in place by Brazil's central bank, which established a legal framework for virtual assets in 2022 and detailed licensing and capital requirements last year.
