Brewing Up a Greener Future: Hawkesbury Co Harnesses Bitcoin Heat

Hawkesbury Brewing Co on Australia's Central Coast has found an innovative way to utilize excess energy generated by its solar panels - Bitcoin mining computers.

The brewery, like many others in the industry, faced a common challenge: generating renewable energy but struggling to make use of it efficiently. Adam Neale, Operations Manager, explained that exporting excess power back to the grid was not lucrative and left the brewery with significant hot water needs for brewing and cleaning.

Nearly two years ago, Neale's team discovered that using Bitcoin mining computers could be a game-changer. These machines produce heat as a byproduct of their operation, which can be captured and repurposed for heating purposes.

The brewery has implemented a system where 16 mining computers sit in a liquid-filled tub that cools the devices while simultaneously warming up to nearly 90 degrees Celsius, providing exactly what they need for brewing and cleaning. The Bitcoin generated by these machines earns Hawkesbury Brewing Co around $2,000 per month, almost covering its power bills.
