Brian Armstrong: Philanthropy is Often 'Net Negative' for Society
Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong recently expressed a contrarian view on philanthropy. He thinks many charities are 'net negative' and often get captured by ideology, leading to unintended consequences.
Armstrong compared this phenomenon to Henry Ford's foundation, which he believes would be unrecognizable to its founder if he knew what it was doing today. The CEO of the world's largest cryptocurrency exchange has a donor advised fund (DAF) instead of a traditional foundation. He uses it to support causes that advance civilization.
Armstrong is not alone in his skepticism about philanthropy. Billionaires like Elon Musk and Peter Thiel have also questioned its effectiveness. Musk has even accused MacKenzie Scott's philanthropic efforts of making the world a 'worse place.'
