British Man Recovers $5M Worth of Lost Bitcoins After 12-Year Ordeal
A British Bitcoin investor has finally recovered his 61 BTC after a 12-year ordeal. The coins were lost when Intersango, one of the UK's early crypto exchanges, collapsed in 2014. Chris, the investor, initially bought £1,500 worth of Bitcoin in 2011 through Intersango.
The value of his investment skyrocketed by the time the exchange began running into trouble, making his coins worth around £4,000. However, when Intersango went down, Chris was unable to access his account or withdraw his funds.
Chris tried to recover his Bitcoin for years but failed to get access to the exchange or his account. It wasn't until he turned to CEL Solicitors in 2026 that things started moving forward.
The legal team gathered old records and other documents to prove that the Bitcoin belonged to Chris. Using blockchain tracing, they identified a wallet containing thousands of Bitcoin linked to the failed exchange.
In May 2026, after several months of work, 61 BTC were returned to Chris, ending his 12-year effort to regain access to the coins. The recovered Bitcoin is now worth around $5 million, making Chris's original £1,500 investment a multimillion-pound fortune.
