Broadcom Ditches Public Clouds for Private AI Haven

Broadcom is doubling down on its bet that private clouds are the best place to run AI agents, rather than public ones. The company's VMware division has been rolling out a series of upgrades to the Tanzu platform, designed to keep autonomous AI workloads locked inside private cloud infrastructure.

The foundation of this push is the VMware Tanzu Data Intelligence data lakehouse, launched in August 2025. This hybrid storage system combines the flexibility of a data lake with the structured querying power of a traditional data warehouse.

Broadcom's security-focused piece is the Tanzu Platform Agent Foundations framework, introduced in April 2026 as part of Tanzu 10.4. This framework operates on a deny-by-default networking model, where AI agents cannot communicate or access anything unless explicitly granted permission.

The system also leverages trusted Buildpacks for what Broadcom calls immutable supply chains, meaning the software components that make up each agent's runtime cannot be tampered with after deployment. Each agent runs inside sandboxed containers with enforced CPU and memory limitations.
