BTC Treasure Hunt Unlocked for Early Users
A potential $432 million treasure hunt for early Bitcoin users has been unlocked after CEL Solicitors traced more than 5,500 BTC that it believes belong to former users of Intersango, an early Bitcoin exchange that disappeared over a decade ago.
The value of these coins is approximately $433.5 million at the current price of near $78,824 per BTC. One former UK customer has already recovered 61 BTC from the exchange's remains, giving other users a concrete example of how old balances can turn into successful ownership claims.
CEL says that useful evidence can include email addresses attached to accounts, correspondence with Intersango, and bank statements documenting transfers to the exchange. However, obtaining bank records from almost 15 years earlier has become a major hurdle in establishing ownership.
