BTCBOX Reopens After Six-Month Shutdown, Mandates Passkey Authentication
Japanese cryptocurrency exchange BTCBOX has ended its six-month total service suspension and resumed login access and cryptocurrency deposit services on August 2. As part of the overhaul, users are required to register a passkey, a phishing-resistant cryptographic credential tied to their device biometric or PIN, before accessing their account.
The company implemented this change after an external security review and recognized that passwords were no longer sufficient for high-risk financial actions. Japan's financial regulators formally acknowledged this in 2025, accelerating the adoption of passkeys across the country's fintech sector.
Users can now log in with their passkey and deposit cryptocurrency onto the platform, but withdrawals remain offline pending further safety verification. Japanese yen withdrawals are scheduled to resume on August 10. The company emphasized that users should access the platform only via previously bookmarked or saved URLs and warned against phishing attempts.
