BTCPay Offers $190k Bounty for Return of Stolen Bitcoin
BTCPay Server has offered a $190,000 bounty for information leading to the recovery of stolen Bitcoin. The Node provider made the announcement after attackers exploited a vulnerability in LND software last week and drained wallets attached to it.
The attack resulted in losses for merchants who use BTCPay Server's services, including hardware-wallet maker Foundation and bitcoin publication Citadel21. Neither BTCPay nor the victims have disclosed the total amount lost so far.
BTCPay has urged affected merchants to report the theft to local police and any service that may be involved in tracing the stolen funds. The company is also advising merchants to keep their funds in cold storage and regularly move excess out of hot wallets, especially during this period of rapid change.
The Bitcoin Red Team, a volunteer effort that began pointing AI models at bitcoin codebases last month, has been credited with discovering the vulnerability that led to the patch. As part of the bounty, BTCPay is donating 0.21 BTC each to developer Craig Raw and the Bitcoin Red Team fund.
