BTC's Wild Ride: Path vs Displacement Ratio Hits Extreme Levels
The price of BTC on Binance has been behaving in an unusual way over the past 44 days, according to a TradingView chart. During this time, the cryptocurrency opened at $63,144 and closed at $64,532, resulting in a net movement of 1,388 points. However, when looking at the highs and lows for each day, it's clear that the price actually moved much further.
Over these same days, the total high-minus-low came out to 64,247 points. This means that the path the price took was 46 times greater than the displacement, or where it ended up versus where it started. This phenomenon is not unique to BTC, but it's certainly extreme for this particular instrument.
For trend followers, this raises important questions about their strategies and assumptions. Are they focused on price arriving at a specific destination, or are they concerned with the path that price takes? The ratio of path to displacement can provide valuable insights into market behavior and help traders make more informed decisions.
