Bunin Warns Lower ETH Staking Yields Favor Intermediaries Over Solo Stakers
Viktor Bunin, lead of protocol operations at Coinbase, has raised concerns about the potential impact of lower Ethereum staking yields on solo stakers. According to Bunin, reducing staking yields could disproportionately benefit large intermediaries like Coinbase at the expense of individual investors.
Bunin suggests an alternative approach: increasing hardware requirements by 2 to 5 times instead of lowering yield. This proposal aims to deliver a greater overall benefit to network participants, as it would incentivize solo stakers to upgrade their equipment and contribute more resources to the Ethereum network.
The comments from Bunin come on the heels of rapid user growth at Coinbase, with the platform reaching 8.2 million users in Q1 2026 amidst a surge in FOMO (fear of missing out) in crypto markets. The addition of 500,000 users in a single quarter is considered significant.
