Buterin Seeks Radical Redesign for Prediction Markets

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has raised concerns about prediction markets drifting towards short-term speculation and away from their original purpose of providing societal value.

In a recent post on X, Buterin argued that these platforms have achieved significant scale, with enough volume to support full-time traders, but are increasingly focused on crypto price bets and sports gambling.

He suggested that the model currently relies too heavily on 'naive traders' making poor bets, which incentivizes platforms to cultivate low-quality engagement. Instead, Buterin proposed prioritizing 'hedgers,' who accept small expected losses in exchange for reducing risk.

Buterin's most forward-thinking idea is a system where users hold personalized baskets of prediction market shares linked to price indices of goods and services they actually consume. This would eliminate the need for USD-backed stablecoins, as users could rely on prediction market hedges for stability.
