Buterin Sees 60% Chance of Sub-10x Computing Overhead for SNARKs and More
Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has estimated that there is a 60% chance of SNARKs, FHE, and iO reaching sub-10x computing overhead.
He believes that at least one of these technologies will reach single-digit overhead by the end of this decade, with SNARKs being the most likely candidate. However, no deadline applies to all three tools.
The distinction matters as the timeline remains narrower than the headline probability suggests.
SNARKs are a type of zero-knowledge proof that allows for the verification of computations without requiring every verifier to repeat the entire process. They have become central to Ethereum's zero-knowledge scaling model, but proof generation remains a major constraint.
Buterin pointed out that recent research has shown certain large language model inference workloads approaching less than 10x proving overhead and specialized hash functions already achieving single-digit overhead.
