Buterin Stakes 90% of Net Worth on Crypto Resilience Amid AI Fears
Vitalik Buterin, co-founder of Ethereum, has publicly stated that nearly 90% of his net worth is exposed to cryptocurrency assets. This means he would experience significant financial losses if Bitcoin were to plummet by more than half its value within the next two years.
The prediction of a potential 50% decline in Bitcoin's value comes from AI-risk commentator Liron Shapira, who assigned a 50% probability to this event occurring. Shapira's argument centers around the possibility that increasingly capable artificial intelligence systems could undermine the security assumptions behind decentralized networks like Bitcoin.
Buterin disagrees with Shapira's prediction and believes that decentralized networks can adapt quickly enough to address potential technical vulnerabilities. He points out that changes involving software clients, mining pools or infrastructure can be implemented through coordinated upgrades and technical changes, without requiring every participant in the ecosystem to reach immediate agreement.
