Buterin Tackles Local Mixing in Final IO Research Post
Vitalik Buterin, co-founder of Ethereum, has published his final post in a series on indistinguishability obfuscation (iO). This time, he's exploring local mixing, a method that alters the structure of computer programs without changing their functionality.
Unlike other approaches to iO, local mixing doesn't rely on elliptic curves or lattice-based cryptography. Instead, it uses basic logic circuits built from gates such as XOR, AND, and NOT. By changing the structure of these circuits while preserving how they work, researchers can create reversible circuits that are harder to recognize.
Buterin's research targets future cryptography, with potential applications in public-key encryption and other ways to hide how computer programs work. The method remains experimental and relies heavily on random circuits, but if successful, it could contribute to new forms of encryption.
Buterin has previously examined other approaches to iO, including diamond iO. With local mixing added as another developing path, the research continues to progress with more expected in the future.
