Buterin vs. Shapira: Can Bitcoin Adapt to AI Security Threats?
A debate has emerged between Silicon Valley investor Liron Shapira and Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin regarding Bitcoin's (BTC) ability to adapt to future AI security threats. Initially, Shapira stated that there was a 50% chance that Bitcoin's price could plunge by 40% in the next two years due to advances in artificial intelligence that hinder the security and robustness assumptions around cryptocurrency.
However, following comments from Buterin and AI researcher Eliezer Yudkowsky, Shapira reduced the probability percentage to 40%. Buterin took an opposing view, stating that Bitcoin can survive such threats through upgrades to mining pools and clients.
The discussion centers on whether advances in artificial intelligence could create security issues that BTC's existing infrastructure may be unable to address. Buterin remains positive about cyber safety in the long term and believes that technical upgrades can provide a route for BTC to deal with upcoming threats.
