Buterin Warns Excessive Complexity Threatens Ethereum's Core Principles
Vitalik Buterin, co-founder of Ethereum, has sounded an alarm about the network's growing complexity, warning that it threatens its core principles of trustlessness and self-sovereignty. In a recent statement, Buterin emphasized the importance of protocol simplicity in maintaining decentralization.
The developer identified 'protocol bloat' as Ethereum's critical long-term risk, citing the tendency to add features without removing outdated ones. He proposed explicit 'simplification' and 'garbage collection' mechanisms to counteract this trend. Buterin outlined three key metrics for measuring simplification: minimizing total lines of code, avoiding dependencies on complex cryptographic components, and adding protocol invariants that strengthen security guarantees.
The warning comes as Ethereum faces mounting competition from alternative layer-1 blockchains that prioritize different trade-offs between complexity and functionality. Buterin suggested future changes could include Rosetta-style backwards compatibility, where legacy features become smart contract code rather than mandatory protocol requirements.
