Buterin's Quantum Leap: Ethereum Roadmap Prioritizes Safety Over Scaling
Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has updated the Ethereum roadmap, prioritizing quantum safety over other goals. In an August 10 post, Buterin compared his old 2023 roadmap to the new Strawmap, highlighting the changes and additions. Quantum safety is now the top goal, due to the risk of a powerful quantum computer breaking the digital signature used for transactions.
Several older plans have been pushed down or dropped from the roadmap, including Verkle trees, which were replaced by PBT. The updated roadmap also includes new privacy tools, such as keyed nonces and wormholes, designed to make it harder to see who is sending money to whom.
The update raises questions about the future of the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) and how issuance changes might fit in. Buterin hinted that the EVM could one day be replaced by leanISA or RISC-V. The roadmap's three-to-four-year timeline has also been criticized, with some arguing that AI tools could help finish the work in about one year.
For everyday holders, this update shows that Ethereum's future security plans now focus more on quantum safety and privacy than they did in 2023.
