Buyback Bonanza Fails to Boost Token Prices
Crypto token buybacks have reached an all-time high of $640 million, but this surge in spending doesn't seem to be affecting the market prices. In fact, despite protocols buying back tokens worth billions, many of these tokens remain stagnant or decrease in value.
The number of weekly repurchases was around $40 million as recently as August 2025, with Hyperliquid and memecoin launchpad Pump contributing significantly. However, by the end of 2025, protocols had bought back over $1.4 billion of their tokens.
CoinGecko data shows that buybacks accounted for nearly $2.8 billion out of a total volume of $18.8 billion in burns and buybacks by 27 active tokens from January 2025 to July 2026.
