Bybit Sues North Korea for Record-Breaking Crypto Theft
Bybit has filed a civil lawsuit against North Korea and its Reconnaissance General Bureau in a US federal court over a cryptocurrency theft valued at $1.5 billion.
The exchange, which was attacked in February 2025, alleges that the Lazarus Group, linked to North Korea, orchestrated the cyberattack that led to the loss of funds.
Bybit has also secured a preliminary injunction freezing identified digital assets allegedly linked to the attack, citing that only a small portion of the alleged theft has so far been recovered or restrained.
The exchange plans to seek further judicial relief as the case advances and has shared blockchain intelligence with law enforcement agencies, including the FBI, in pursuit of broader enforcement efforts.
Ben Zhou, co-founder and CEO of Bybit, stated that the company's focus remains on protecting users, recovering stolen assets, and holding perpetrators accountable.
