Bybit Sues North Korea, Lazarus Over $1.5 Billion Crypto Hack

Bybit, a major cryptocurrency exchange, has filed a civil lawsuit in the US against North Korea and its Reconnaissance General Bureau over a $1.5 billion hack that took place last year. The suit was filed in the US District Court for the District of Columbia.

The attack occurred on February 2025, with the Lazarus hacking group stealing approximately $1.5 billion worth of Ether from Bybit's users. Chief Executive Officer Ben Zhou stated that the company aims to protect its users, recover as many assets as possible, and hold those responsible accountable.

Bybit has also secured a preliminary injunction barring the transfer or disposal of certain assets tied to the case while the litigation proceeds.
