Bybit Sues North Korea Over Massive $1.5 Billion Crypto Heist
Bybit, the world's second-largest cryptocurrency exchange by trading volume, has taken legal action against North Korea and the Lazarus Group for orchestrating a massive $1.5 billion theft in February 2025.
The lawsuit, filed in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, also targets the Democratic People's Republic of Korea's Reconnaissance General Bureau (RGB) and other unnamed individuals and entities holding or moving stolen funds.
Bybit has secured a preliminary injunction freezing identified stolen assets held by these parties, which represents an important step in recovering funds and supporting international law enforcement investigations.
The court found that Bybit demonstrated a likelihood of success on the merits in its lawsuit, and the civil proceedings aim to preserve identified stolen digital assets while litigation continues.
