The California legislature has passed Assembly Bill 2409, which prohibits public officials and employees of public agencies from issuing memecoins. Memecoins are cryptocurrencies based on internet memes or trends that often have little inherent utility.

The bill aims to curb potential conflicts of interest and market manipulation by preventing public figures from leveraging their positions to promote speculative digital assets. It also includes a provision that would prohibit listing such memecoins for California residents starting January 1, 2027.

The legislation responds to growing concerns about public officials promoting speculative digital assets, potentially misleading constituents and creating financial risks. If signed into law, California would become one of the first states to explicitly regulate memecoin issuance by government figures.
