Call Options Roar Ahead of High-Leverage Perps Amid Bitcoin Surge
Bitcoin's explosive price surge from $62,000 to nearly $80,000 in just one week was a stress test for various trading instruments. The results showed that call options outperformed high-leverage perpetual futures by a significant margin.
In modeled scenarios comparing the two strategies, long call options returned 582%, while equivalent high-leverage perp setups delivered 450%. This 132-percentage-point gap is substantial and highlights the power of convexity in options trading.
Convexity refers to the payoff curve accelerating as the trade moves in favor. When a call option goes deeper into the money, its delta increases, amplifying gains without additional exposure. In contrast, perpetual futures offer linear returns, which become ceilings during violent price movements.
The options market's sentiment data also supported the performance numbers. On Deribit, call options accounted for roughly 59% of open interest during the rally, indicating a decisive tilt toward bullish positioning. The 30-day 25-delta skew turned positive at +2.78, with the front-end curve spiking above +5.
