Canaan Stock Surges 13% on Trump's CLARITY Act Push
Canaan Inc., a leading manufacturer of bitcoin mining hardware, saw its stock surge by 13% on August 20 after US President Donald Trump urged Congress to approve the CLARITY Act. The bill proposes to assign regulatory responsibilities to both the Securities and Exchange Commission and the Commodity Futures Trading Commission, introducing new requirements for disclosure and registration targeting digital-asset intermediaries.
The CLARITY Act has been making progress in the Senate, with a 15-9 vote in favor of advancing the legislation on May 14. Trump's public push on August 19 increased executive branch involvement, signaling to lawmakers that they should advance the bill. However, some lawmakers continue to push for tighter restrictions on cryptocurrency ownership and endorsements by public officials.
Canaan's treasury holdings play a significant role in its market value, with disclosed coin holdings worth around $146.1 million as of July 31, representing 72.3% of the company's market capitalization. Analysts are optimistic about Canaan's prospects, with an average target price of $1.72, more than six times its current closing price.
However, risks remain, including a potential decline in bitcoin prices if short covering slows, which would reduce both treasury holdings and miner profitability. Additionally, Canaan must maintain a minimum share price of at least $1 for ten consecutive business days by January 11, 2027, to address Nasdaq's minimum price requirement.
