Canada Clears Tokenized Deposits for Banking System
Canada's Office of the Superintendent of Financial Institutions (OSFI) has cleared the way for tokenized deposits to be integrated into its banking system. The regulator, which oversees nearly 350 financial institutions and 1,200 pension plans, took a technology-neutral stance on these digital representations of actual deposits.
According to OSFI, 'the underlying technology of a financial product or service does not determine its legal nature.' This means that tokenized deposits are bound by the current regulatory framework, avoiding the need for additional regulation. The regulator emphasizes that financial institutions are responsible for ensuring compliance with applicable laws and regulations.
The move paves the way for banks to begin implementing tokenized deposits on their platforms, taking advantage of their benefits while lifting the compliance burden in Canada's crypto-friendly environment.
