Canada Freezes Trade Talks with US Amid Tariff Spat
Canada's trade relationship with the US has effectively been put on ice following the collapse of negotiations in late August. Prime Minister Mark Carney described the US demands as 'unfair and uneconomic,' leading to a breakdown in talks.
The sticking points included restrictions on Canada's ability to pursue trade agreements with other countries, along with complications involving automotive sector protections and cultural safeguards that Ottawa considers non-negotiable.
US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer confirmed that no new negotiations are currently planned, and the US has imposed 50% tariffs on between $20 billion and $28 billion worth of Canadian exports, targeting goods that had previously enjoyed preferential treatment under the USMCA framework.
Canada is retaliating with matching tariffs set to take effect on September 8, aiming to let the economic consequences play out in American living rooms and voting booths ahead of the November midterm elections.
