Canada Matches US Tariffs in Growing Trade War

The trade war between the US and Canada has escalated significantly, with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney calling US tariffs 'an attack in a war'. Ottawa will not back down from this conflict, which has become one of the most significant North American trade disputes in decades.

The latest round of US tariffs targets some of Canada's most important export sectors, including vehicles, auto parts, and steel. The 50% tariff on approximately $20B worth of Canadian exports is effective August 22, 2026, but Ottawa will match the retaliation dollar-for-dollar from September 8.

The trade tensions have been building for over a year, with prolonged negotiations under the USMCA framework failing to produce a resolution. A key sticking point was the US exclusion of medium- and heavy-duty trucks from proposed tariff relief.
