Canada Prepares to Hit Back at Trump Tariffs with 'Whatever It Takes' Approach

Canada's Prime Minister Mark Carney said his government is prepared to take action if US President Donald Trump follows through on his threat to impose a 50% tariff on C$20 billion of Canadian goods. Speaking at a meeting with provincial premiers, Carney stated that Canada will do 'whatever it takes' to defend its workers, farmers, businesses, and families in the ongoing trade war.

The US Trade Representative, Jamieson Greer, defended the new tariff duties as an effort to protect American workers and reduce the trade deficit, which he described as a 'national emergency'. However, some Canadian premiers have expressed caution about retaliating, with Alberta Premier Danielle Smith saying that 'you don't go into a discussion saying you're going to punch somebody in the nose if they don't give you what you want.'

Cryptopolitan reported earlier that Carney had initially taken a diplomatic approach, but his stance shifted after Trump increased tariffs and ended negotiations. Now, with only 27 days left before the August 19 deadline, Ottawa is considering several options, including retaliatory tariffs, export limits, procurement restrictions, energy taxes, or a WTO complaint.
